A Rotary Moment: A Very Special Rotarian Greg Podd returns to Texas for District Training
Kris Nordstrom McBride
Feb. 7, 2020
Rotary has been blessed over its 100-plus year history to have had literally thousands of VSR - Very Special Rotarians - among its ranks. These are super star men and women who truly have a servant’s heart and have given much of that heart - plus their time, talent, and treasure - to make the world a better place. Over the weekend of Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 we were honored to have one of those people in our midst to work with us at our “Rotary Super Heroes” District Training. We send a big Montgomery County thank you to Rotarian Greg Podd and his wonderful wife, Pam.
Greg, a born and bred Texan, graduated from Texas A&M University before setting out on his career path as a CPA and raising a family with Pam. They now split their time between homes in Phoenix, Arizona and one of my favorite places in the country, Evergreen, Colorado. It was nice to have this native son with us, who told us several times “I love being back in Texas and it’s nice to hear ‘ya’ll’ spoken again”.
Greg’s Rotary life has been led with accomplishments since he joined Rotary in 1982. He quickly rose through the ranks in his club, then in his District and Zone. His talents did not go unnoticed by Rotary International, and for the last decade he has been serving in various positions within RI, including current board positions on both the Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. But even with all his accomplishments and honors, it was a 15 minute presentation and a personal story that won my heart and those of many others during our time together.
In 2006, Greg led his District’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) to The Philippines. GSE was a fabulous RI program that paired a group of young professionals from one district with a similar group from another part of the world. For 3 to 4 weeks, the groups exchanged places, visiting the other’s country, staying with Rotarians and soaking up local culture and business practices. As with much of what Rotary does, the underlying theme of these visits was peace and acceptance - the more we know and appreciate different cultures and traditions, the more tolerant and understanding we are.
Greg showed us a slide of an adorable young girl who was maybe 5 or 6, dressed in bright clothing and standing in front of some beautiful foliage. A typical vacation type shot. Then he told us the story behind the photo. “I don’t know her name” he said “but we were with our guides, exploring her village. I brought small toys with me to hand out to the children - tiny trinkets of good will. They would tug on my pant legs as I walked through the dirt streets. It was a little disconcerting at first, but then our guide explained that seeing Americans brought them hope for the future, so they wanted to touch us and ‘receive’ some of that hope.”
He went on to tell us that explanation made sense to him and he was comfortable then, understanding what was going on. A short while later he felt that tug on his leg again, and turned to see this little girl. They smiled and visited for a short while, not able to speak one another’s language, and then she reached for Greg’s hand and touched it to her forehead. “I had no idea what this was about” Greg shared” but when I looked up at our guide for an answer, his eyes were filled with tears.’She is giving you the only thing she has’ said the guide ‘with that gesture, she was giving you a blessing’.”
Greg told us his eyes filled with tears then too, and I noticed he had to pause for a moment when he told this story, the emotions returning. I chatted with him later in the day and as we spoke of the story, tears welled up again for both of us.
This is a man who has literally raised millions of dollars for Rotary; he has pretty much met every notable Rotarian in office for the last decade, entertained people from all over the world, received just about every award given by Rotary, and has made personal financial contributions that have made he and Pam members of The Arch C. Klumph Society, Rotary’s group of largest donors. And still he was brought to tears by the simple action of a child, whose name he will never know. THAT is the heart and soul of Rotary.
Thank you, Rotarian Greg, for being who you are. May life continue to bless you and Pam and your family again and again.
